From wetland to vacation destination

Long before modern roads and summer cottages, the Indian Lake area began as a group of small lakes and wetlands shaped by glaciers. Over the 19th century the body of water was enlarged and managed as the Lewistown Reservoir to support canals and local industry; later it evolved into the recreational Indian Lake that drew tourists and entrepreneurs to its shores. That transformation set the stage for Russells Point’s summertime boom.

The village is named for a local family

Russells Point takes its name from the Russell family, local landowners whose homestead sat on the point of land that became the village. A post office opened at Russells Point in 1913, and the community formally incorporated as a village in the late 1920s as the lakeside economy expanded.

The heyday — Sandy Beach, Minnewawa, and summer thrills

In the 1920s through mid-century, Indian Lake and Russells Point earned regional fame as a Midwest playground. Sandy Beach Amusement Park and the Minnewawa Dance Hall drew big crowds with roller coasters, boardwalks, live orchestras, and summer boat rides — earning the area nicknames like the “Atlantic City of the West.” Though the amusement park era has passed, its stories are part of the village’s proud cultural legacy and are preserved by local historians and collectors.

A living small town with lakeside charm

Today Russells Point blends its resort past with everyday community life. With marinas, restaurants with boat docks, parks, and community events, the village continues to be a gateway to Indian Lake recreation while serving year-round residents. Local groups such as the Indian Lake Area Historical Society and the Logan County History Center help preserve photographs, artifacts, and oral histories that keep the village story alive.
